We are often asked – why is natural oak flooring better than engineered? What should we think about when selecting wooden flooring for the house?
The first consideration when selecting oak hardwood floor is where it is going to be installed and the moisture content of the room or rooms. For example, caution is advised when laying the flooring in the basement as they are generally damper and it may cause problems.
It is important to consider how much use the flooring with take – is it likely to endure scratches, spillages or other heavy use. Oak flooring is quite easy to maintain, and reputable flooring manufacturers such as ourselves, will be able to give advice on the most appropriate after-care.
The period and the style of the house is a consideration as well. Tudor Oak offer three types of flooring. Tudor Restoration, with knots, splits and optional rose-head nails, is most suited to a period house; it will withstand heavy use and dents won’t be noticeable. If anything, they will add to the character of the flooring.
Character grade is the most popular choice of solid oak flooring. It has a smoother grain and smaller less frequent knots than the Tudor Restoration. It is traditional flooring, which shows the natural beauty of oak including ‘’pip’’ and some knots. This flooring has a wide appeal, it adds warmth and subtle character to a home or to a commercial property, such as a hotel, and is suitable for a dining room, kitchen or a bedroom.
Standard Prime is made with “cleaner” oak, and is ideal for underfloor heating while still showing some natural features. It would be suitable for a more modern house, but it would look equally beautiful in a period property with a modern “twist”.
What the flooring is laid on would have an impact on the thickness of the flooring. Highly experienced staff at Tudor Oak work with each client individually. They will undertake a free, no-obligation site visit to help the client to decide.
At the Tudor Oak mill we select timber for each project individually, to ensure a consistency in quality. The floorboards are offered either square-edged or with tongue and groove fitting and are supplied un-stained (in the white) or stained to the customer’s requirements.
The colour of the finished flooring would depend on the size of the room as well as its lighting. The darker the flooring, the smaller and darker the room would seem. Tudor Oak offer a choice of stains and finishes that will also help to hide dents and scratches.
In our opinion, European Oak (Quercus Robur) is one of the finest hard timbers for the best quality wood flooring. However, we can source other quality hard timbers to meet the clients’ needs.
There are many things that need to be considered when selecting solid oak flooring. But it needs to come from a reputable company, with experience in making high quality solid oak flooring.
As well as flooring, Tudor Oak also offer internal and external solid oak doors, windows and other bespoke joinery.[su_custom_gallery source=”media: 1991,1990,1989″ link=”lightbox” width=”360″ height=”240″]
Fresh from the success of the Grand Designs Live exhibition in London at the start of May, we, once again, are taking part in the Wealden Times Midsummer Fair, between 4th-6th of June, at Hole Park , Rolvenden. We are absolutely thrilled to be a part of this event, which takes place in what must be one of the loveliest settings in Kent.
Over 150 hand-picked exhibitors will be featured at the Fair, selling contemporary and vintage homewares, garden accessories, fabulous fashion and jewellery as well as artisan produced food and drink. We feel very privileged to be showing our oak panelling, doors and furniture – the Fair is always massively oversubscribed with companies wanting to sell their wares and the entry standards have been set very high. Exceptional quality, good craftsmanship, originality and fine design are all essential qualities of products sold at the Fair – this means that we will fit very well with the rest of the exhibitors with our handmade joinery and furniture.
This year the Fair also features Priceless People – Wellbeing Festival 2015, with a host of famous faces over three days including the TV presenter and fitness guru Davina McCall, botanist James Wong, super flexi foodie Julie Montagu, Psychologies Editor Suzy Greaves, yoga guru Swami Saradananda and maverick and ecological Anglican priest Peter Owen-Jones for a series of inspirational talks and creative workshops.
Come and find us at stand P13 in the Purple Marquee; we will be presenting a selection of oak furniture, panelling and doors, with great prices to all visitors of the Wealden Times Midsummer Fair.
A jazz brass band greeted us the morning the Grand Designs Live exhibition kicked off its 9-day event. Ok, so the musical fanfare was only to signal the time the general public was allowed into the exhibition but we at Tudor Oak like to think that it was actually in honour of celebrating our first ever stand at this annual event.
Either way, we’ve had a warm welcome. Situated in the Build section of the exhibition (there are 7 in total – Interiors, Technology, Kitchens, Bathrooms, Gardens, Village, Build), we’ve been visited by architects, interior designers, various trades, self-builders, couples renovating their homes and members of the public at the start of their projects keen to gather ideas and see what can be done.
One of the great things about being part of the Grand Designs event is the chance to check out the competition and while there were a number of companies specialising in hand-carved pieces, flooring, timber and wooden furniture, it quickly confirmed to us that what we provide is really quite unique. Our products and service may not be the cheapest around but we can’t be beaten on quality.
English (European) Oak (Quercus Robur) is no longer grown in large, sustainable quantities in Britain. During the British Empire vast swathes of Oak trees were used to supply the ship-building trade for the British Navy, with the result that many of our natural forests have been depleted.
For this reason, the English Oak we use is sourced from FSC and PEFC-certified forests in France. The environment and sustainability is at the heart of our business. Also, as we’re a small company we have the luxury of knowing each of our clients by name. Whether it’s a builder in need of some trade timber, or a customer about to embark on a renovation/refurbishing project, we lead the client through every step of the process, offering a truly bespoke service.
As we reflect on the Grand Designs Live 2015, it has been heart-warming to see how many people have flocked to our stand. I don’t think it was just the free chocolates bearing our logo that enticed the crowds, although like our products, they were of the finest quality (Belgian dark chocolate, in case you were wondering!) The golden-warm oak Wealden Manor House door usually stopped people in their tracks but many were also drawn to the dark wood panelling which adorned the back of our stand. In fact, we had so many enquiries about it that we are currently in the process of designing and printing a new brochure specifically featuring the different wood panelling options we do. So watch this space!
Many thanks to all those who visited our stand over the last week and we look forward to working with you in the near future.
From all of us at Tudor Oak.[jaw_image image=”1976″ lightbox=”0″ link=”#” target=”_self” hover_image=””]
